The world of neuromodulators has become more confusing over the past several years with the introduction of several new products. Here I hope to answer some common questions.
Neuromodulators, such as Botox®, Xeomin® and Dysport®, are substances that cause muscles to relax. When injected into specific muscles in the face, they soften the wrinkles. If done on a regular basis, they can also help prevent against the formation of new wrinkles.
Botox®, Xeomin® and Dysport® all work the same way as they share the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin A. They all relax muscles and smoothen wrinkles. The primary difference between these products is in the manufacturing process.
You may experience minor swelling at the injection site. This swelling resolves after about 15 minutes, so you can go about your normal activities immediately after receiving treatment. Although uncommon, you may also have slight bruising at the injection site. You can apply makeup right after the injection.
In most patients, results of neuromodulator injection typically last between 3-4 month.
