Wrinkle-smoothing botulinum toxin type A injections are the most common non-invasive aesthetic procedure in the U.S. While they are commonly called “Botox,” there are actually four different injectables. The four neurotoxins FDA-approved for cosmetic use are Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin®.

While each neurotoxin is slightly different, some patients respond better to one over the other. Knowing this, I keep all 4 on hand in my office and choose the best one based on the patient and their goals. Most doctors and patients refer to neurotoxins as “Botox,” much like we call adhesive bandages, band-aids and tissues, Kleenex even though there are the 4 different companies that now manufacture botulinum toxin type A.

As an Oculoplastic surgeon, I have a deep understanding of the anatomy of the eyelids and how the muscles around the eye work. This knowledge of the anatomy of the eyelids, eyebrows and upper face allows me to expertly use botox to achieve my patient’s goals.

When I meet with a new patient who is requesting Botox, I first evaluate their entire face. We then discuss the specific areas that brought them to the office, and what they would like to do to correct them. Then I realistically explain what Botox can achieve.

The main areas I treat with Botox are the forehead, glabella (from lines), around the eyes (crows feet), masseter muscle (jawline) and mouth lines. Botox can be used to smooth dynamic wrinkles, lift the eyebrows, and smooth mouth lines. I also use it to relax the masseter muscle which can help with teeth clenching, migraines and improves an overly square or thick jawline.

I am asked all the time what is the “right” age to start Botox treatments. The answer depends on each individual. The youngest patient I have treated with Botox was 25 at the time. Starting early can help to prevent permanent wrinkles from forming. Once a frown line or forehead line is etched into your skin when you are not expressing, it can be challenging to treat with Botox alone.

Many of my young patients are nervous at first that they will look overdone. Some are worried that Botox will make their face look frozen. This is absolutely not the case. In the right hands, Botox treatments look soft, natural, and overall make the face look more rested and youthful. However, the final result does depend on the experience and technique of the injector.

As an oculoplastic surgeon, I understand the dynamic relationship of the muscles around the eyes and the upper face. I can expertly use Botox to raise the brows (liquid brow lift) and also to soften frown and smile lines, all while keeping the face looking natural and untouched. I understand how it is essential that the facial muscles are balanced so that the brow remains in a natural position, and nothing looks “done.”

The answer is different for everyone! I see many patients in their 20s who have had lower lid bags since their teens. For these patients, mid to late 20s can be the right time to have these bags removed.

I see patients in their early 30s who are beginning to notice frown lines and crow’s feet. For them, it may be the right time to start getting Botox.

I also see patients in their late 40s who have never considered cosmetic surgery but no longer want to look tired. They feel great, but what they see in the mirror does not reflect how they feel. For these patients, late 40s may be the right time for cosmetic eyelid surgery.

And then I see many patients in their 50s, 60s, 70s and even 80s who want to look refreshed and less tired. So cosmetic eyelid surgery can be a good idea at many different ages.

Call us at (212) 832-5456, or request online that we call you back by submitting our online request form here.
