When you look in the mirror, you may notice more than one sign of aging at the same time. Loose or heavy eyelids can make you look tired, while uneven skin texture, wrinkles, or sun damage can add years to your appearance. The good news is that you don’t have to address these concerns separately. By combining blepharoplasty (upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery) with advanced non-surgical skin treatments, patients can achieve a refreshed, natural look that brightens the entire face.

The best non-surgical treatments to pair with eyelid surgery are laser skin resurfacing, Botox, dermal fillers, and laser skin resurfacing, which work together to smooth, tighten, and rejuvenate the surrounding skin.

To learn more about whether this combined approach is right for you, contact Dr. Jessica Lattman at her Park Avenue office at (212) 832-5456. Dr. Lattman is a board-certified oculoplastic surgeon specializing in upper and lower blepharoplasty as well as non-surgical facial rejuvenation.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, removes excess skin, tightens muscles, and smooths puffiness around the upper and lower eyelids. It’s one of the most effective ways to open up the eyes and restore a rested, youthful look. Patients in their 40s, 50s, and 60s often choose this procedure to correct drooping lids or under-eye bags, but it can benefit younger patients too if genetics cause early changes.

Why Combine Eyelid Surgery with Skin Treatments?

Eyelid surgery alone can dramatically improve drooping lids or under-eye bags, but many patients also have concerns about fine lines, uneven tone, or skin laxity. By addressing both structural issues (through surgery) and surface concerns (through treatments), results look more harmonious and balanced.

Patients often find that their recovery timeline is streamlined as well. Since both issues are corrected in a coordinated plan, they don’t need to return for multiple separate recoveries.

Benefits of blepharoplasty include:

A brighter, more awake appearance

Reduced wrinkles and fine lines

Improved skin tone and texture

Restoration of youthful volume in the cheeks and under-eyes

A more efficient recovery, since concerns are addressed at the same time

What Skin Treatments Pair Best with Eyelid Surgery?

Dr. Lattman offers a number of skin rejuvenation options that complement blepharoplasty, including:

Fillers: Restore youthful volume to the cheeks or under-eyes (tear troughs) for a smoother, rested appearance.

Botox®: Relax dynamic wrinkles around the eyes and forehead, softening expression lines and preventing new ones from forming.

Laser Skin Resurfacing: Fractional CO2 laser smooths wrinkles, improves skin tone, and stimulates collagen for firmer, more even skin.

For patients looking for a comprehensive refresh, combining surgery with one or more of these treatments can create subtle but powerful results.

Dr. Lattman’s Dedication to Her Patients

“First, she is a brilliant doctor (and may I also say artist in the way she approaches surgery). I trust her implicitly. Second, she is a kind, caring, and empathetic person whose kindness shines through in everything she does. Surgery is always a journey. Dr. Lattman and her staff are attentive to their patients every step of the way. There were so many questions and fears I had. Dr. Lattman always took the time to answer and always made sure I was ok. Her staff is incredible. They share and emulate her kindness and caring and take their time, above and beyond, to care for their patients. Dr. Lattman is truly at the top of her game. We are lucky to have her right here in NYC.” – Review from RealSelf

One of the things patients consistently say about Dr. Jessica Lattman is that she makes them feel cared for every step of the way. From the first consultation to the final follow-up, Dr. Lattman is personally involved and never rushes the process. She takes the time to listen closely, answer every question, and design a plan that feels right for you, not just what’s easiest for the surgeon.

Her commitment doesn’t end when the procedure is over. Patients describe how she checks in regularly during recovery, ensuring comfort and peace of mind, whether they are from New York or traveling from across the country or abroad. Even on vacation, she makes herself available so that her patients never feel alone in the process.

Dr. Lattman’s practice is built on the belief that no patient should ever have a bad experience. Her staff shares that philosophy and provides warm, attentive support that makes each visit welcoming and reassuring. Dr. Lattman’s reviews repeatedly highlight how she goes above and beyond to deliver not only exceptional surgical results but also a genuine sense of trust and safety.

For Dr. Lattman, excellence in oculoplastic surgery is about more than technical skill; it’s about creating a partnership with her patients so they feel truly seen, heard, and understood.

Customized Treatment for Natural Results

Every patient’s face tells a unique story. Some patients benefit from upper eyelid surgery with a light touch of Botox in the crow’s feet. Others may choose lower eyelid surgery along with fractional CO2 laser to smooth fine lines.

As an oculoplastic surgeon, Dr. Lattman approaches each case with both artistry and precision, always prioritizing the health and function of the eyes. Her goal is to restore a naturally rested, youthful look, not to change the character of your face.

What to Expect from the Process

At your consultation, Dr. Lattman listens carefully to your goals and designs a personalized plan. Surgery is performed in her fully accredited Manhattan surgery center, while complementary treatments may be scheduled at the same time or shortly after, depending on your needs.

Recovery varies by procedure, but most patients can expect some swelling and bruising around the eyes for the first week. Skin treatments like laser resurfacing may add mild redness that resolves over several days. Most patients return to work and social activities within 1 to 2 weeks, looking refreshed and rejuvenated.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Both Blepharoplasty and Non-Surgical Treatments?

You may be a strong candidate if you:

Have drooping eyelids, bags, or excess eyelid skin

Notice fine lines, crow’s feet, or forehead wrinkles

Want to address sun damage or uneven skin tone

Are looking for natural results that refresh your entire face, not just one area

During your consultation, Dr. Lattman will evaluate your facial structure, skin condition, and goals to determine whether surgery, non-surgical treatments, or both are best for you.

Is a Full Facial Refresh Right for You?

If you’ve noticed tired or heavy eyes along with changes in your skin’s texture or tone, combining eyelid surgery with complementary treatments may be the most effective way to restore balance and vitality to your appearance. To explore your options for eyelid surgery and skin rejuvenation in NYC, schedule a consultation with Dr. Jessica Lattman today.
Life for all of us has changed. We are spending much more time on video platforms such as Zoom, Skype and FaceTime. Whether it be for social connection or work obligations we are all seeing more of ourselves. I have seen this reflected in conversations I have with patients daily in my office.

Patients often come into my office saying that they don’t like looking at their heavy upper eyelids, wrinkles or lower eyelid bags on video calls. It gives me great joy to offer both surgical and non-surgical options to improve the way my patients look and feel about themselves.

One of the most common procedures I have been performing lately is the upper eyelid blepharoplasty. This corrects heavy upper lids, removing skin that is drooping. It is a simple procedure that can be done with local anesthesia. Most patients are back to work within a few days.

I have also been combining the upper eyelid blepharoplasty with the endoscopic brow lift. This is helpful for patients who have a low brow, especially for those with heavy skin and drooping in the outer corners of the eyelids. The endoscopic brow lift gives a natural rejuvenation to the brow with hidden incisions and a fast recovery.

As an oculoplastic surgeon I spend many days talking to patients about how to improve the appearance of their eyelids. This can be a confusing topic. Patients often come to the office saying that they look “tired” all the time but don’t know exactly how to fix the problem. They tell me that no matter how much they sleep, they still wake up with dark circles and a tired appearance.

A tired appearance can be caused by several different issues. In this blog I am going to focus on the lower eyelids. Under eye bags and dark circles make the whole face look tired. No amount of sleep will help to improve the bags. Also, loose and wrinkled lower eyelid skin can give a “tired” appearance.

The non-surgical treatment for lower eyelid bags and dark circles is to use an injectable filler to smooth out the contour of the lower eyelid. I use Restylane in the lower eyelids. Filler can help to improve the couture of the lower lids and remove dark circles. Not everyone is a good candidate for lower eyelid filler. So it is important that I evaluate all aspects of the eyelid before choosing the best treatment.

The surgical treatment for under eye bags and dark circles is a lower eyelid blepharoplasty. In this procedure I remove and reposition fat pockets in the lower eyelid to improve the contour of the lid. If needed, I also tighten the deeper layers of the eyelid and trim the skin to give a smooth appearance to the eyelid. Often I will also resurface the eyelid skin with a CO2 laser to smooth out fine lines and improve the elasticity of the skin.

A swollen eyelid occurs when excess fluid builds up in the loose connective tissues around your eyes, Typically a swollen eyelid will resolve on its own in a day or two. But if it lasts longer than then it is important to have it evaluated and treated.

There are several reasons that you may experience a swollen eyelid. They include:

Allergies – This is the most common cause of a swollen eyelid, especially this time of year. Most allergies are due to seasonal pollen, but the swelling can also be due to a reaction to food, chemicals or other irritants that get in contact with your eyelid skin.

Conjuntivitis – More commonly known as “pink eye,” this is an infection that causes swelling, redness and discharge from the eye. It can be caused by a virus, bacteria or allergens.

Chalazion – A blockage of a tear gland in your eyelid can cause a red bump that may be tender to the touch. This may cause swelling of the affected eyelid.

Orbital Cellulitis – This is an infection of the eyelid and the tissues around the eye. This can be caused by bacteria spreading from a sinus infection or trauma to the eyelid skin. It causes redness and painful swelling of the eyelids. This is a true emergency and needs to be treated with antibiotics.

If you feel the urge to rub your eyes, consider using a tissue instead of your fingers. Dry eyes can also lead to more rubbing, so consider adding an artificial tear drop to your routine. There are also many good over the counter allergy drops that can help to stop the itch. If you must touch your eyes, first wash your hands with soap and water, and then wash them again after touching them.

If you have other questions or concerns please reach out to my office. Because the eyelid skin is in constant motion, blinking, smiling etc, it gets a lot of wear and tear. Also the eyelid skin is exposed to UV rays more than other areas of the body. Genetic predisposition can also lead to early aging around the eyes.

Common issues related to the eyelid skin are, fine lines, discoloration, dark circles and puffiness. No matter what your age, it is never too soon, or too late to start caring for your eyelid skin. Here are a few of my favorite tips:

As an eyelid specialist, I see patients every day who are bothered by aging changes of their eyelids. I am often asked, “What can I do to rejuvenate my eyes?” Some of my patients come to see me with a procedure in mind and others are interested in simply knowing what’s possible. Below are surgical and non-surgical options for improving the appearance of the eyelids:

Cosmetic Blepharoplasty: Cosmetic Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure where the upper and/or lower eyelids are rejuvenated. This involves the removal of excess skin and the tightening of the underlying muscle. Fat pockets are also trimmed and/or repositioned to improve the contour of the eyelid.

Injectable Filler to the Lower Eyelids: Injectable fillers such as Restylane can be injected into depressions of the lower eyelid to improve contour. This can help to improve the appearance of lower eyelid bags and dark circles.

Laser Skin Resurfacing: In my office I use a fractionated CO2 laser to improve the appearance of the eyelid skin. This laser reduces fine lines, gives the skin a firmer, smoother appearance, improves scars, reduces sun damage such as brown spots and reduces skin blotches. The laser can be used to treat just the eyelid skin or the whole face.

I am often asked by patients what is the best time of year to have cosmetic eyelid surgery. There are pros and cons to each time of year. But what I universally believe is that it should be done at a time of year when you can block out time from work and other responsibilities to give yourself time to rest and heal.

The winter is often a good time to have cosmetic blepharoplasty because most people are less active and can hunker down for a few days while they recover. I have a lot of patients who don’t want to give up time out on the golf course or swimming at the beach. So for them the winter is a great time.

For others the summer is the ideal time. School and work schedules tend to slow down and the evidence of surgery can be easily covered with a pair of sunglasses. I have a lot of moms who do their surgery while their kids are off at sleepaway camp or other summer adventures.

If you are combining your surgery with a laser skin resurfacing I would suggest doing it at a time when you will not be in direct sun, so fall and winter are the best times for that.

Call us at (212) 832-5456 or request online that we call you back by submitting our online request form here.
